Mr R.I.T. Alles has been bestowed with the title of “Sri Lanka Sikhamani” in the National Honours list of Her Excellency President Chandrika Bandaranayake for the year 2005. Mr Alles was a teacher of Royal College for a decade. He was the founder principal of D.S. Senanayake College and served the institution till the school celebrated her silver jubilee. Then Mr Alles was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, where the ten thousand schools in the island were under his purview. He was also the Head of Zahira College and after his tenure of office there, established the Gateway Group of Companies that embodied two international schools in Colombo and Kandy, and a wide coterie of computer and language units in Sri Lanka and aboard.

Mr Alles was a member of the Presidential Commission of 1990 that looked in to the causes of Youth Unrest. He was also awarded a scholarship by the International Development Resource Center in Ottawa to study school systems in Singapore, Bangkok, India, Germany, UK, the States and Japan.
