Gateway College to celebrate tenth Anniversary

Established in 1997 in a converted house with 33 students and 8 members in the tutorial staff, Gateway College, Colombo is to celebrate its 10th Anniversary during the coming academic year. Teachers, Parents and Past pupils of the school intend carrying out several activities throughout the academic year to celebrate this important milestone.

The tenth anniversary celebrations were inaugurated recently by the school management and staff with a teacher training workshop and get together at the Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya. The Parents and the Alumni have taken the lead to organize a carnival on the 8,9 and 10 of December to raise funds for the College Swimming Pool. In April 2007, a festival of games will be held with the participation of all stake-holders. In July 2007 a walk is to be organized to promote child protection.

Every year teachers of Gateway are sent to the United Kingdom on teacher exchange programmes. They are provided with the opportunity to visit schools of excellence in the UK observing the British Curriculum in practice in the host country. They return with a wealth of experience and exposure and are able to make improvements to the Teaching Learning Programme. Gateway maintains teacher exchange programs with Tonbridge Girls Grammar School, Sutton High School and Aberdour school.

The non-availability of a resource base of good teachers fluent in English and conversant in modern teaching methodology, continues to be a problem faced by all Schools in the country. Gateway employs a varied programme to overcome this problem. Every year, staff development workshops for all teachers of Gateway Colleges -Colombo and Kandy are conducted. Gateway invites educationists of international repute both from Sri Lanka and abroad to carry out these workshops.
Further, the in-house Staff Quality Enhancement Programme is carried out on a continued basis aimed at improving the Teaching Learning Process. This provides opportunity for discussion and consolidation.

Gateway is currently working on an ambitious program to further integrate ICT into teaching and learning. To facilitate this process, all teachers are provided with the opportunity to get a training leading to the International Computer Driving Licence, at the Gateway Centre for Information Technology. They are able to receive prestigious ICDL certification from the ECDL Foundation (UK). The Directorate intends to provide a world class education to its students, by making the entire staff of Gateway proficient in using the relevant application software which is essential for the future growth of the school.
