Gateway College has acquired a brand new fleet of Boats to promote the sport of Rowing among students. The new fleet of boats was launched at a ceremony held at the Colombo Rowing Club on 27th May 2013.
Gateway College which was established in 1997 has grown rapidly in a short span of sixteen years to become one of the most sought after International School in the Country. The school now has three branches in Kandy, Negombo and Bambalapitiya in addition to the parent school in Rajagiriya.
Rowing was introduced to the school last year, adding to over 12 games and sports available to the students of the school. There has been tremendous enthusiasm from boys and girls of all age groups to take on this graceful, yet demanding sport which has prompted the management to invest in the future of the students by acquiring the required boats. The new fleet of boats and equipment include:
- Two Fours that can be converted to Quadruple Sculls
- Two pairs that can be converted to Double Sculls
- Two Single Sculls
- Coaching/Umpiring Launch for the first time in Sri Lanka
- Two Concept 2 Ergo meters
- 14 Sweep Oars and 12 Sculls from ‘CROKER’ Australia.
The boats are Racing Class, made of High Tech material manufactured to International Competition Standards under the guidance and supervision of Philip Kemsley of Ruk-Sport, the legendary rower and boat builder in the UK. These boats are state of the art and user friendly in both design and technology.
The Boats have been aptly named as Victory, Invincible, Challenger, Endeavor, Yamato and Mayflower taken from famous Battleships of the past.
The Oars and Sculls are from ‘CROKER’, the Australian brand which won most gold medals at the London Olympics.
The Coaching /Umpiring Launch acquired by the school is the very first in the country and is bound to improve the training and coaching capabilities. This will be a huge boost towards improving the overall efficiency of time management of the students and enhance the effectiveness of the training regime.
The school also has plans to set up its own boat house on the Diyawanna Oya, near Waters Edge which will further strengthen the capacity to pursue this exciting sport vigorously.
The Board of Directors of Gateway firmly believe in the all round education of students as a fundamental requirement for the formation of a balanced individual capable of coping with the challenges of life. The school encourages sports and extracurricular activities towards that end.
Gateway College already boasts of a state of the art indoor sports complex housing a squash court, two badminton courts, table tennis and a gymnasium. The Swimming Pool which is now under construction will be commissioned for use by the end of this year, adding to the facilities already available to students.
The newly acquired fleet of Boats and equipment will be a tremendous boost to students as they aspire for placements in top Universities of the world. Gateway students are now able to compete on an even keel, both in Academics and Sports, when vying for places in any prestigious universities in the world.
