Gateway College celebrated its 20 th Anniversary by conducting religious ceremonies with the participation of students belonging to all faiths.
The main event was the chanting of Pirith to invoke blessings on the school which was held on 11 th January at the school campus in Rajagiriya. The unique feature of this event was the attendance of 350 student monks from the Asgiriya Pirivena in Kandy. The picturesque campus of the school came alive with the radiance of such a large number of monks which was a rare sight in a school compound. The pirith chanting was held in the midst of a large gathering of parent, teachers, students, alumni and well- wishers including the Minister of Education Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and the Secretary of Education Mr. Sunil Hettiarachchi.
The Islamic religious observances also took place in the School premises. The Quran was recited by well- known scholars while the students also took an active part in leading the prayers. The Catholic Mass was held at All Saints Church Borella with the participation of a large gathering of the Gateway Community. One of the features of this Mass was the blessing of the National flag, School flag and the House flags by the officiating priest. The religious celebrations concluded with a Hindu Pooja specially organized at the Sri Manikka Vinayager Kovil at Bambalapitiya. The Board of Directors of the school along with the staff and students were blessed in traditional Hindu custom at this ceremony.
These events were a fitting tribute to the founder late Mr. R I T Alles who instilled the ethos of respect to all faith and celebration of diversity together as one community. It was clearly evident that the legacy of Mr. Alles is carried on to date as the Gateway community demonstrated unity and cooperation at all these events.
