Gateway Negombo celebrates an excellent year in academics

The annual Awards Day of Gateway College, Negombo was held on 30th October at the Banquet Hall, Jetwing Blue, Negombo. The Annual Awards Day is the highlight of the School’s activity calendar where the outstanding achievements of the students in both academic and co-curricular activities are acknowledged and appreciated.

Vidyakeerthi Professor Chandana Jayarathne from the University of Colombo graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Professor Jayarathne is a Professor of physics at the University of Colombo and the Consultant to the Space Science Division of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies at Moratuwa.

Professor Jayaratne, was escorted to the Hall by Principal Mrs. Devika Alldis, Chairman Dr. Harsha Alles and Director Mrs. Dinali Alles. The oil lamp was then lit followed by the school song and devotional chanting. Head boy and Head Girl for 2015/2016 Ibrahim Bin Iqbaland Geetha Annamalai delivered the welcome speech, greeting all who were present.

The school report was a highlight of the evening. Principal Mrs. Devika Alldis, expanded on the school’s progress and achievements while acknowledging the dedication and commitment of both students and teachers alike. In her speech she elaborated on how the young school has performed, progressed and become accomplished. She stated ‘we have created a conducive and positive learning environment, resulting in progressive academic excellence. This evening is a celebration of the excellence of the students and to appreciate everyone who was behind these accomplishments. This was an excellent year for our small school, beginning an era that will remain resonant in the years to come in the halls of this educational institution’.

Mrs. Alldis detailed how Gateway College, Negombo, made remarkable progress in its short existence as an academic institution that provides world-class education. Six students received accolades for their excellent accomplishment of 4 As at the Advanced Subsidiary exam. Eight students obtained 7 A Star grades or more at the International GCSE examination. Among them Isuri Navarthana and Kavindya Gayashini Perera were the stars with eleven A Stars each. Gershon Prithveen Devadason who received S4 level in all 3 subjects and 100% for Mathematics as well as Keshin Savindu Karunarathne who also received 100% for Mathematics at Edexcel Lower Secondary level were also among the outstanding achievers.

Chairman of Gateway Group Dr. Harsha Alles expressed his views as he spoke expressively about the great strides taken by Gateway College Negombo and its development over the past eight years. He commended students for their achievements and encouraged the school to move forward in their pursuit of academic excellence.

Guest of Honour, Professor Chandana Jayaratnein delivering his address, spoke about how students can cope with conditions of stress in their lives in order to maintain and achieve greater academic excellence.
