Gateway Students take Astronomy for GCSE (OL)

As the first school that introduced Edexcel IGCSE in Sri Lanka, Gateway College looks back with satisfaction on how they have been able to offer a broad curriculum to their students at OL and how they have benefitted from it. In line with the thinking of the Independent Schools in the UK, Gateway discourages early specialization and at OL, they encourage their students to take a variety of subjects from different disciplines.

With the addition of Astronomy, students have 24 subjects to choose from at OL. They include subjects related to Sciences, Mathematics, Business, Humanities, Languages, Arts, Technology and Sport. Astronomy specification includes: Earth, Moon and Sun, Planetary Systems, Stars and Galaxies and Cosmology.

ICT and Computing too have become an integral component of the teaching and learning process at Gateway. In this regard, the school is fortunate that the ‘Computer Pioneers’ (CP) curriculum that has been designed and developed by the Gateway Kids School of Computing and fully endorsed by Edexcel UK, is fully incorporated into their school curriculum. Through CP, students receive the most up-to-date training in areas such as Robotics, Animation, Data Logging, Control etc. that supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) learning. Through this well-structured programme that has an international reach, students are able to receive certification from Edexcel UK, at the end of every academic year.

Chairman Gateway, Dr. Harsha Alles says, “Education has begun to transform rapidly in the recent years, but we believe we are still seeing only the beginnings of change. As an International School in Sri Lanka that is responsible and accountable to our own destiny, we also have to be alert to the changes that are taking place in the education systems around us”.

He also says, “The education systems world over are undergoing change. There are many changes taking place in the United Kingdom too. Closer to home, especially in the Far East, we see the emergence of highly competitive systems. As a responsible educational organization, we cannot simply ignore what is happening around and be complacent, especially when we see that the economic dominance is shifting from the west to the east”.

Gateway’s curriculum, therefore, should be considered as one that is not fixed as they make alterations whenever necessary. Dr. Alles, however, mentions that, “Whatever changes that take place, Gateway has and always will, strive to offer a balanced curriculum that is aimed at the holistic development of every pupil”.
