Gateway’s Shelinda Jansen - Best Performer of ISAC for the second time

Shelinda Jansen of Gateway College Colombo who excelled at the Youth Olympics held in Argentina, received the R.I.T Alles Challenge Trophy and the Edexcel Challenge Trophy for the second successive year by winning both 100m and 200m at ISAC 2020.

The International Schools’ Athletics Championship (ISAC) 2020, organized by Gateway College, was held from 14 - 16 February 2020 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The well orgasnised meet saw 2000 athletes from 24 reputed International Schools in healthy competition and good sportsmanship.

Mrs. Rohini Alles, the Managing Director of the Gateway Group was the Chief Guest at the Opening Ceremony on Saturday the 15 th while Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, the Minister of Foreign Relations and Minister of Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations and Leader of the House of Parliament graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest on Sunday the 16 th of February. Ms. Premila Paulraj, Regional Director - Asia, Pearson PLC and Mr. Nalin Herath, Chairman of Home Lands Skyline were the Guests of Honour for the Closing Ceremony.

The Principal Sponsors of the event were Pearson Edexcel and Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. The event was also supported by Home Lands Skyline, The Hatton National Bank, DSI Samson Group, Airtel, Oxford University Press, Asiri Health and the Gateway Graduate School.

Gateway Kandy overcomes Trinity to win the R.I.T. Alles –Ireland Jones Trophy

Gateway College Kandy came through stiff resistance to beat Trinity College 2-1 to win the R.I.T. Alles – Ireland Jones Challenge Trophy. The encounter named after the Founders of these two prestigious institutions was a part of the Inaugural Quadrangular Encounter that included three sports; namely Basketball, Football and Netball. Trinity College was first to score but Gateway Kandy who enjoyed most part of the possession, came back strongly in the second half to clinch the game. Gowtham Ravindran of Trinity was named the Best Goalkeeper and Venura Gunarathne of Gateway was recognized as the Player of the game.

Hillwood College, Kandy came out strongly to outdo the girls of Gateway College Kandy to win the Rohini Alles – Somakumari Samarasinghe Challenge Trophy. The champion Hillwood side dominated the game throughout to win by a margin of 32-15. Mrs. Rohini Alles of Gateway College, the wife of the founder Chairman, the late Mr. R.I.T. Alles, is currently the Managing Director of the Gateway Group. Mrs. Somakumari Samarasinghe was the first Sri Lankan principal of the 130-year old Hillwood College. It was pleasing to see Mrs. Rohini Alles herself gracing the occasion to handover the trophy. Special awards were won by Shenali Jayaweera of Gateway - the Best Defensive Player, Rovindi Abeysinghe of Hillwood - Best Shooter, Gihansa Nakandalage of Gateway - Best Center Court Player and Samudra Rajapaksha of Hillwood - the Netball Queen. Girls High School Kandy beat Gateway College Colombo 14 -7 in the invitation game.

Asoka Herath - Ranil Meetiyagoda Challenge Trophy was also won by Gateway Kandy who recorded an easy 58-26 win against St. Sylvester’s. Kanchana Jayasinghe of St. Sylvester’s - Best Offensive Player, Vinuk Walisundara – Best Defensive Player and Seshith Ariyawansa – Most Valuable Player were the award winners. Gateway Kandy had a very comfortable win over Hillwood with a score of 29-16 in the invitation girls’ game.
