Gateway wins hard fought game with Royal to clinch the Alles-Gunasekara cup

Spectators were treated to an exhilarating game of Basketball on Saturday 22 nd as Gateway College Colombo beat defending champions Royal College in a tightly fought contest at the Henry Pedris Basketball Complex. Gateway maintained their lead throughout the thrilling forty minutes, winning the Alles-Gunasekara Trophy 62-57.

The game got off to a quick start with Gateway setting the pace for a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Gateway dominated the game throughout the second quarter and were securely in the lead at half-time with 34-27. The third and fourth quarters saw Royal College fight back with renewed energy but Gateway remained firmly in control as they clinched the trophy with a convincing display of skill and strategic plays.

Gateway’s Chevaan de Costa was adjudged Most Valuable Player for some fancy footwork and lightning speed on the court which ensured that the ball remained with the team. High scorers for Gateway were Aaron Fonseka(19), Chenuka Kasthuriarachchi(14) and Chevaan de Costa(12).

Royal College fought hard to retain the trophy with both Heshan Hansaka and Ravindra Jayawardene scoring 12 each. However, several missed baskets took the game away from them and sealed victory for Gateway.

In the Under 15 game, Gateway beat Royal (27-21), while the Invitation match between Gateway and Ladies College also went to Gateway with a convincing 19-7.
