Re-building of the Tsunami Devastated C.W.W.Kannangara School in Galle

In the immediate aftermath following the tragedy in December 2004, Gateway College decided to take on a task that would have long term benefit rather than short term relief. In doing so, our priority was to engage in a project that would make an impact on children and education. We were of the opinion that the worst affected from the calamity were children and that the best remedy for the mental trauma that they had experienced was to get them back to school and engage them in education.

Gateway College was the first organization in Sri Lanka to take on the responsibility of re-building a tsunami affected school. As early as the 2 nd of January, barely a week after the catastrophe, we pledged to re-build the tsunami devastated C.W.W.Kannangara School in Galle in order to give its students their school back …and their lives. We took to our task immediately and were the first organization to commence construction when we laid the foundation stone for the new building complex on the 26 th of January, 2005 , exactly a month after tsunami. On the 17 th of December, 2005 , when we handed over the newly re-built school to the Government of Sri Lanka, we were again the first organization to complete a fully fledged school within a year after tsunami. Today, we are pleased to see the fruits of our efforts, when we see these children smile again. We will strive to give them a secure and safe learning environment in which they can excel… But most of all we will fill their lives with love…and give them hope for a better tomorrow.

Message from His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka

In the immediate aftermath following the tragedy in December 2004, Gateway pledged to re-build a tsunami devastated school in order to give its students back their school… and their lives. Gateway's immediate objective was soon realized when the school was able to start functioning along with other schools in the island. They were then the first to commence construction of a school. Today, within a year after tsunami, I am very pleased to accept a fully fledged newly built C.W.W.Kannangara College on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka.
